Performance

In Matters of Rhythm, Rita Mazza explores the composition of visual sound. Together with lighting artist Hanna Kritten Tangsoo and inspired by the rhythms of sign language, Mazza delves into the relationship between body and light, developing movement and light choreographies that create music for the eyes.

Music is moving in waves. It travels through space and time. Light also travels in waves and needs a body to reflect. Light and bodies moving together through space and time are constantly creating a choreography of visual frequencies. In Matters of Rhythm, Rita Mazza develops choreographies that focus on the relationship between the body of the performer and the light as the source of movement. They explore how light and movement come together, communicate, interact, build a relationship and, in doing so, produce music for the eyes. Mazza and Kritten Tangsoo also question how the contrasts between nature and capitalism, between circular and linear rhythms, shape our movements.

The performance lasts 60 minutes and has no intermission.

Matters of Rhythm has been developed as a relaxed performance. The format is aimed in particular at neurodivergent people (e.g. autistic people or people with Tourette), but also at all people for whom sitting still for long periods in the theatre (e.g. due to chronic pain) is a barrier. Movements and noises from the audience are explicitly welcome.

From 30 minutes before the performance, an access assistant will be available in the step-free entrance area to answer questions about the accessibility of the performance. Communication is possible in German and English (written and verbal).

Early boarding will be available 10 minutes before the performance begins. This time can be used to familiarise yourself with the space and choose a comfortable seat.

There is free choice of seats with bean bags, chairs and wheelchair spaces.

Studio 1 has a 1.5m sunken floor area that is only accessible via seven steps. The lower area of the studio is therefore not barrier-free. Step-free access to the upper part of the studio is possible.

Due to the characteristics of the venue, bean bag places are accessible only via stairs.

Step-free wheelchair spaces are available upon request with prior booking.

Please make use of the Early Boarding 10 minutes before the performance begins if you require a specific seat or make a reservation in advance with mad@uferstudios.com.

There will be blankets, water, sugar, and stim toys available in the space.

The performance uses various light settings, intensities, and rhythms, including moving light objects, pulsing and flickering lights, bright/glare and dim scenes, and a wide range of intense colours.

On the second day of the performance, a joint haptic orientation tour of the space will be offered one hour before the show. Audio description will also be available on this day via headphones.

Event details may vary up to one week before the performances. Please check our website shortly beforehand for the latest program information.

The photo shows performer Rita Mazza in a stage or rehearsal setting illuminated with intense, colored lighting. The background glows in deep blue-purple, with several hanging light bulbs emitting a vivid violet light. Rita Mazza stands in the foreground, mostly in shadow, holding a piece of shiny, translucent foil in warm red-orange above her head. A light source behind the foil makes it glow brightly, creating a strong contrast against the cool tones of the background. The scene feels theatrical, mysterious, and full of energy.
